PETT TAKES CONTROL WITH DOUBLE VICTORY AT CADWELL
25th August 2014 – TriStar R&G Triple Challenge leader Freddy Pett dominated proceedings at Cadwell Park, setting a new lap record and taking both race wins. With crashes from title rivals Scott Pitchers and Phil Atkinson, Pett now holds a commanding lead at the top of the standings. Sam Thompson continued his dominance in the Cup class taking an eighth consecutive race win and even securing a podium in the main Championship.
With sunny and dry conditions greeting the riders for their first free practice session, Freddy Pett set the benchmark, topping the session by over half a second. Carrying this imperious form over to qualifying, Pett took pole position for the opening race, finishing 0.854s ahead of second place Phil Atkinson. Current Cup leader Sam Thompson took his best qualifying position of the year in fifth.
As has become customary in the TriStar R&G Triple Challenge, the opening race was an action packed affair, being brought to a premature halt on lap 8 by a red flag. Grabbing the holeshot from pole position, Pett set about controlling the race from the front however closest title rival Atkinson crashed out on the opening lap. By the end of lap two Pett had a 1.5s lead over Scott Pitchers, however a string of fast laps saw the second place man close up on Pett. Not to be outdone though, the Championship leader set two lap record breaking laps to enjoy a 3.156s lead at the time of the red flag. In the Cup class, Sam Thompson took his seventh consecutive victory on his way to a career best finish of fourth in the main class.
Race two on Bank Holiday Monday was equally as exciting as a spectacular crash from Andrew Lund at the end of the opening lap saw the air bag thrown onto the track, necessitating a three lap pace car break. Starting from fourth on the grid it was Cup competitor Thompson who took the holeshot ahead of Pett, however the opening race victor quickly moved into the lead. As the pace car pitted in, Pett enjoyed a flying lap to lead by 0.6s over the line, however just like the opening race Pitchers began closing in before Pett set the fastest lap of the race. Unfortunately, Pitchers crashed out of contention on lap 8 giving Pett an unassailable lead as he took his fifth win of the year. Despite having to start in eighth, Phil Atkinson passed Thompson for second place on the penultimate corner with the Cup competitor taking his first main podium in third. Cup newcomer Matt Waldron took another second, with Kieron Newman in third.
Freddy Pett said; “It’s been a mega weekend! I’ve felt really comfortable on the bike in every session and with the points being halved after the last round it’s nice to be able to walk away with a bit of a buffer over the guys behind. Walking away with a new lap record is an added bonus! Although it might have looked easy out there the guys pushed me really hard, with Pitchers pushing me in both races. I just want to say a massive thanks to my brother who’s worked incredibly hard all weekend and to all my sponsors!”
T3 Racing owner and series organiser Tony Scott is looking forward to returning to Cadwell Park, “Once again the TriStar R&G Triple Challenge and Cadwell Park have thrown up the anomalies of stock standard racing, with two incredibly exciting races. Freddy Pett has enjoyed the best possible start after the half points to build up a bit of a lead, however the real star of the weekend for me was Sam Thompson with his third in the main championship. It’s a shame for both Pitchers and Atkinson as their crashes have seen them drop back a little on points.
The season now moves from the technical Cadwell Park to some of the speed circuits, which will likely affect tall Freddy the most and we’ll see some of the smaller guys come to the front.”
